چکیده

Article history: Received 19 June 2017 Received in revised form 14 July 2017 Accepted 14 July 2017 Available online xxxx Two-step flash sintering (TSFS) was proposed as a new ceramic fabrication method to achieve fast densification with suppressed grain growth. Using ZnO as an examplar, ~96.5% of theoretical density was achieved using TSFS with a grain size of ~370 nm, representing a N3 times reduction of the grain size in comparisonwith conventional (one-step) flash sintering. Moreover, TSFS achieved this result in a few minutes, N200 times faster than that needed for conventional two-step sintering to obtain comparable results, thereby representing an opportunity for significant energy and cost savings. © 2017 Acta Materialia Inc. Probing the densification mechanisms during flash sintering of ZnO

Using ZnO as a model system, the densification mechanisms of flash sintering are investigated. Controlled experiments via limiting the maximum current or the effective ramp rate suggest that both the maximum specimen temperature and the high heating rate (on the order of 200 C/s) are essential for the rapid densification during the flash sintering. Moreover, benchmarking rapid thermal annealing...

Thermal runaway, flash sintering and asymmetrical microstructural development of ZnO and ZnO–Bi2O3 under direct currents

DC flash sintering of both pure and 0.5 mol.% Bi2O3-doped ZnO at a relatively high activating field of 300 V/cm has been investigated. It is demonstrated that even high-purity ZnO single crystals can “flash” at 870 C. In comparison, flash sintering occurs at a substantially lower onset temperature of 550 C in ZnO powder specimens, indicating the important roles of surfaces and/or grain boundari...

Hybrid processing and anisotropic sintering shrinkage in textured ZnO ceramics.

We have studied the combined effects of the templated grain growth and magnetic alignment processes on sintering, anisotropic sintering shrinkage, microstructure development and texture in ZnO ceramics. Suspensions of 0-10 vol % ZnO template particles were slip cast in a 12 T rotating magnetic field. Sintering and texture characteristics were investigated via thermomechanical analysis and elect...

Grain growth kinetic of spark plasma sintered magnesia

In this research, the densification of magnesia nanopowder with a mean particle size of about 100 nm was investigated by spark plasma sintering undera pressures of 80 MPa and at temperature range from 1000 °C to 1400 °C and a heating rate of 50 °C/min for 20 minutes. The density of the samples slowly increased with increasing sintering temperatures to 1200 °C. Afterwards, with more increasing o...

Promoting the flash sintering of ZnO in reduced atmospheres to achieve nearly full densities at furnace temperatures of <120°C

Using ZnO as a model system, a strong dependence of the onset flash sintering temperature on the atmosphere has been discovered. In the best cases, ZnO specimens have been sintered to >97% relative densities (with fine grain sizes of 1 lm) in 30 s at furnace temperatures of <120 C in Ar + 5 mol.% H2. The enhanced conductivities of ZnO powder specimens in reduced atmospheres are responsible for ...
